Eat Your Values!

Last night we picked up our bag of beautiful, local, and fresh veggies as part of the Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) program we signed up for this past winter (Hurray for Laughing Stock Farm!).  Living in Maine, especially if you are an urban apartment dweller like myself with no current access to our own growing space, we decided to sign up for a winter CSA to keep us fresh through the snowy days and nights.  Eating raw food is important and eating local raw food is even more important! Not only are you supporting the local economy, you’re getting food that is truly fresh – from farm to table to tummy.  Yum!

Supporting CSAs is a revolutionary act as is powerfully told in The Garden, a film about fighting for South Central Los Angeles’ CSA which was built to bring about healing after the L.A. riots.  Supporting local agriculture is one of the easiest, healthiest, and most joyful ways we can begin to reclaim our foodways and culture.  And it tastes really, really good – so eat your values!

So what exactly are these emblems of the revolution, these gorgeous CSAs?   The University of Massachusetts Amherst Vegetable Program website offers the following great definition of a CSA:

CSA is a partnership of mutual commitment between a farm and a community of supporters which provides a direct link between the production and consumption of food. Supporters cover a farm’s yearly operating budget by purchasing a share of the season’s harvest. CSA members make a commitment to support the farm throughout the season, and assume the costs, risks and bounty of growing food along with the farmer or grower. Members help pay for seeds, fertilizer, water, equipment maintenance, labor, etc. In return, the farm provides, to the best of its ability, a healthy supply of seasonal fresh produce throughout the growing season. Becoming a member creates a responsible relationship between people and the food they eat, the land on which it is grown and those who grow it.

Fresh food high-fives all around! So if you’re interested in supporting the revolution by signing up for a CSA check out the following links:
