Common Ground Fair

Some of the Vibrant Mainers went to Maine’s spectacular Common Ground Fair.  We thought it would be a good idea to make a video.  Maybe interview the folks operating the Solar Cafe and Juice Joint!

But then we saw the kale.

And the many tents to visit.

We may have also got distracted by some box sledding on the hill.

We think everything went as it should, unplanned and wonderful.

Vacationland!

Living in Vacationland (as Maine is sometimes known) has many perks!  It’s easy to take it slow when there is so much beauty to grab your attention.  As you know, Jaime is up at Moosehead Lake and we had an opportunity to make a short but sweet trip up to visit her!  There was a lot to see, so much to do, and lots of wild foods to eat, including Sorrel, which you can learn more about in our newest video.

It was Bronwyn who pointed out the tasty treat growing throughout Jaime’s lakeshore lawn and we were happy to munch away on the sour then sweet green treat (rhymes!).  Bronwyn told us how she used to munch on the stuff during recess as a kid and we were much more keen than her former playground companions to share some front yard delicacies.

Let us know you like what you see by commenting and subscribing!  We love all of your comments and emails, so keep those coming!

Violet Tea for Humidity

In our ongoing effort to keep it cool we’ve created concocted new brews

With a bit of almond milk, blueberries, and other sweet ingredients our Violet Tea has kept us cool.  It also goes well with open-faced sandwiches and kale chips a la Kate Magic.

Galactic Cake Party

When we read about Sweetly Raw dessert diva Heathy’s Ice Cream Cake Challenge we thought it sounded too delicious to pass up.  When dreaming up our ice cream cake we wanted something colorful and full of flavor that would keep us dancing and dreaming all night long.  We wanted a

Galactic Cake Party

Strawberry ice creamy sorbet flew in on her wild space machine to have a cosmic dalliance with spirulina lime green ice cream. But their sweetheart dance wasn’t complete with out the whipped blueberry frosting milky way jumping in to wrap them up in pure galactic bliss. Some blackberry clouds carried the beat.

THE HEART

OF THE

UNIVERSE

IS GREEN

So dance all night
through the galaxies of dreams!

Thanks Heathy for such a fun challenge!  We were plenty inspired by your always golden recipes and our galactic cake party was a blast!

If this cake had a soundtrack it would sound like this…

Sometimes…

Sometimes we make films at the seashore…

Sometimes we make food…

Most of the time…

We eat!

Look out for our new video She Eats Seaweed by the Seashore where we prepare a new meal for you to share with friends and family.  And a special thanks to Heathy of Sweetly Raw for sharing her delicious Coconut Chik’n Curry with Rice recipe which inspired our own dinner pictured above.

Sweet the Sting – Nettles!

Nettles are so well known that they need no description.
They may be found, by feeling, in the darkest night.
~ Culpeper (1561)

As our clever herbalist friend, Culpeper, has written above, Nettles (Urtica dioica) love you so much and they are quite expressive about it with their sharp-toothed sting.  These green leafy wonders are a valuable wild food and can help us reset our bodies through their cleansing and nutritive powers.  Like many of our herbal friends, we want to invite Nettles into our life for the long run to get their full effect.  Nettles strengthen the kidneys and adrenal glands, activate the metabolism, nourish the liver and blood, and improve elasticity of veins.  By bringing Nettles into your body you’re opening up to wild, vital energy. Allergies run and hide when Nettles ride in as they strengthen the outer membranes of cells which makes them less vulnerable to inflammation and allergic reactions. Nettles help to regulate the thyroid and warm nettle tea helps the body to release excess mucus from the lungs and colon and stops the cycle of mucous membrane hyperactivity.

They’re also chock full of vitamins and minerals including:

  • Iron
  • Potassium
  • Silica
  • Vitamin B
  • Vitamin C
  • Vitamin E
  • Vitamin K
  • Magnesium
  • Zinc
  • Protein
  • And more!

Overall, Nettles want to nourish you -
with their sharp-toothed love of awareness
they remind you of your greatness
and your right to feel awesome!

So how can you incorporate their green-sting goodness into your diet?  Nettles are delicious juiced and in a bright green smoothie.  They have a light, grassy taste which I enjoy quite often in teas.  You can also dehydrate the beauties and blend them up into a powder, making your own wild super food powder! I also use Nettles for my hair, in an herbal vinegar rinse, for beautiful bounce and shine as well as to strengthen my nails by soaking them in a strong Nettle tea.  I eat them, drink them, soak in them – we’re pretty good friends.

Eat Wild – Eat Free – Eat Nettles!

If you need more ways to express your Nettle love, be sure to check out the Nettle Appreciation Society on Facebook started by the always sparkling Kate Magic.
